Yes, UBE jurisdictions will accept transferred scores that meet their own passing standards whether or not the score met the passing standard in the testing jurisdiction, assuming all other admission requirements of the jurisdiction are met.

Once a jurisdiction adopts the UBE, will it accept transferred UBE scores earned prior to its adoption of the UBE?

No, not if you want to earn a portable UBE score. UBE applicants must take all portions of the examination (MEE, MPT, and MBE) in the same UBE jurisdiction and in the same exam administration to earn a portable UBE score.

If I took the bar examination in a jurisdiction that administers the MEE, MPT, and MBE, can I transfer my exam score to a UBE jurisdiction?

You must take the examination in a UBE jurisdiction to earn a portable UBE score. If the jurisdiction in which you tested had not adopted the UBE at the time you took the exam, you did not earn a UBE score, even if that jurisdiction administered the MEE, MPT, and MBE.

You might be able to transfer your MBE score to a UBE jurisdiction and sit for only the MEE and MPT (and local component, if the jurisdiction requires) to seek admission in that jurisdiction, but you will not earn a portable UBE score if you do so.

If the jurisdiction in which I took the bar examination administered the MEE, MPT, and MBE prior to adopting the UBE, does my exam score subsequently qualify as a UBE score?

No. The UBE is more than the sum of its components. It is uniformly administered, graded, and scored by the jurisdictions that adopt it. The fact that a jurisdiction administered the MEE, MPT, and MBE does not qualify the score as a UBE score.

If I transfer my UBE score to another UBE jurisdiction, do I have to complete the character and fitness process again?

You must request that your UBE score be reported to the District of Columbia. MPRE Score Report – A minimum score of 75 on the MPRE is required for admission. You may upload a copy of your unofficial MPRE score if you have it.

Admission by Transferred UBE Score is authorized and governed by Illinois Supreme Court Rule 704A.

In order to transfer your score you have to create an account with the New York Board of Law Examiners (“BOLE”). After you create your account you fill out a questionnaire to submit your score and pay a $250 application fee. You also need to transfer your UBE and MPRE scores on your NCBE account.

A score of 280 on the UBE corresponds to the 73rd percentile, a score of 300 to the 90th, and a score of 330 to the top 1% of all scores.

Some people think that UBE scores are good for forever, but unfortunately that is not the case as of now. They are good for a maximum of five years. The chart above, from the National Conference of Bar Examiners, shows the maximum age of transferred UBE score by jurisdiction.

Alternatively, you can wait to submit a UBE Transfer Application and filing fee to us until after you receive a qualifying UBE score of at least 270. Once you submit your UBE Transfer Application, we will conduct a character and fitness investigation. This investigation can take up to nine months.

A 300 is approximately the 90th percentile. A 280 is approximately the 73rd percentile. A 270 is approximately the 58th percentile. A 260 is approximately the 44th percentile.

UBE total scores are based on a 400-point scale, and jurisdictions set their own minimum passing scores. The UBE is graded on a curve, and median scores tend to be highly consistent year-to-year.

A UBE score is “earned” on the last day of the exam administration. Scores that were earned more than five years ago cannot be transferred. Once you submit your UBE Transfer Application, we will conduct a character and fitness investigation. This investigation can take up to nine months.

Any applicant for admission by a transferred UBE score shall be required to complete the Indiana Law Course, a jurisdiction-specific component on Indiana law, not later than six (6) months after the date of the applicant's admission to the Indiana bar.
