What questions do you have to answer to donate plasma? ›

To determine if you are eligible to donate we will:

Ask about your health and travel. Ask about medicines you are taking or have taken. Ask about your risk for infections that can be transmitted by blood—especially AIDS and viral hepatitis. Take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse.

Limiting alcohol and caffeine intake and eating a protein- and iron-rich diet in the days before your appointment can help your body prepare for donation. Eating a healthy snack or meal a few hours before your appointment and staying hydrated is also helpful.

BioLife Plasma Services is among the top payers in the plasma donation industry. On average, BioLife pays about $20 for the first visit and between $30-50 for subsequent donations. Donors can earn up to $1,200 per month, making BioLife an attractive option for regular donors.

For males, the hematocrit level needs to be 39% or greater and the total serum protein level needs to be between 6.0gm and 9.0gm. For females, the hematocrit level needs to be 38% or greater and the total serum protein level needs to be between 6.0gm and 9.0gm.

If you're a regular and you haven't had enough, you should be fine to donate as long as you've had the same amount of fluids you normally would drink on the day before donating. Water is best, but any non-alcoholic fluid will do the trick.

Unlike whole blood, plasma is about 90% water and 10% proteins, so it's best to drink a lot of water and eat protein and iron-rich foods before donating. One of the most important things to do is to eat a full, healthy meal on the day of your donation, within two hours of your appointment.

When you're financially strapped, selling plasma can be an appealing option to drum up some quick cash. Pharmaceutical companies often pay around $50 per donation for the pale-yellow blood component, a key ingredient in medications that treat immune disorders and other illnesses.

It is unhealthy to donate twice a week, even though the U.S. Department of Health allows it. FALSE – It is healthy to donate once or twice each week, if there is a 48-hour period between each donation. Plasma is 90% water and frequent donation will not harm you.

The first half of the day is the best time to donate because, in the morning, the lost components are restored faster. We don't recommend donating blood and its components after finishing a night shift. Women should not donate blood when menstruating.

First, avoid eating a heavy meal before donating plasma. Eating a heavy meal can make you feel nauseous or lightheaded during the donation process. Second, avoid alcohol before and after your donation. Alcohol can dehydrate you and make you more likely to feel faint during the donation process.
