I think everyone's forgetting that Conrad didn't really break up with Belly. Belly basically broke up with HIM. He didn't really put up a great fight when she suggested a break-up, but I do recall that he pounded his fist on his car when she walked away and he called out "Wait"!
Of course, we don't know what was going on in Conrad's mind at the time.. A mother's death is always most tragic, and Conrad was obviously in a state of slight depression.
It was a way of protecting himself, because he thinks if he loves her too much and she leaves it'll kill him. But also a way of protecting Belly, as he think he will take his misery of his mothers death out on her. That's what I think anyway.
I feel bad that his mom died, but he could have fought more for Belly. We all know he loved her, but he never showed it enough. But yes, hard times does lead to stupid mistakes, its too bad his stupid mistake made him lose the one he loved.
But you guys, he wasn't depressed...at least not that much. Susannah hadn't died yet, and he'd been weird all night, like he was really dry. Belly caught on and just assumed he was breaking up with her, we really don't know what Conrad was thinking.
i think he was going through rough times. 8( He wouldnt be just a meanie because he felt like it, especially to belly. His mom died, and he'd promised he'd take care or jeremiah, and all. poor guy...:(
Because its Jenny Han, who doesn't want to explain the situation, she just wanted to make him that mysterious guy that hides his feelings from anyone, and then in the last book she just wanted to pretend he always was thas caring of Belly and his brother(!!??) , and that he's not that jerk who he was at 1,2 books. You know, all that romantic stuff that makes me wanna barf. I'll tell you something. Conrad did not care of anyone, ladies. he only cared of himself. And I dont blame it on him, i would like it so much more, if Jenny Han did not tried to asquit him, because he's not that kind of good guys. He's a badass:) So please, dont try to answer this question, because The Conrad in 3rd book is not that jerk in 1st and 2nd i'm in love with)

Belly makes clear that she's there for Conrad and he can talk to her but he struggles to open up and ultimately keeps her in the dark. At prom, Conrad is completely disengaged and asks to leave. Belly follows him into the rain but Conrad decides to break up with Belly. He thinks that she will be happier without him.
In the second episode, it's revealed that Belly loses her virginity to Conrad by the fireplace in the house at Cousins Beach after the snow at the beach scene. “I felt like that's where Belly was in her journey,” Han tells Variety. “These two characters were very much in love and had known each other their whole lives.
As the story progresses, the reader learns that Conrad is aware that his mother's condition has grown worse and realizes the family will likely lose her soon. Much of what appears to be bad behavior is actually evidence of his emotional turmoil. Instead of sharing his feelings with others, he withdraws into himself.
On the night of prom, he forgot Belly's corsage. He barely danced with her at the venue. When they did dance, he told her he's going back to school instead of the after-prom party.
In another big change, Belly loses her virginity to Conrad in the TV series, which doesn't happen in the books. Considering all of these changes, you might be wondering if "The Summer I Turned Pretty" stayed true to its core story — the love triangle between Belly and the Fisher brothers.
The girl was Conrad's ex-girlfriend Aubrey, and even though Belly and Conrad had already ended their romantic connection, the sight of him being comforted by another girl drove her into a fit of jealousy. Conrad told Belly to grow up, and she cursed at him.
