Based on the second book in Jenny Han's trilogy, It's Not Summer Without You, the show made several major changes to the source material, including the addition of two new characters, a major first for Belly that will shock fans who read the 2010 novel and a surprising romance that has delighted fans.

The Beach House's Sale

One of the biggest changes from the book is the main drama of the seasons -- the sale of the beach house. In the show, Susannah's half-sister is the one who owns the house with her, and, upon Susannah's death, decides to sell it.

In the final book, "We'll Always Have Summer," Belly and Jeremiah become a serious couple and even go to the same college. When Belly discovers he hooked up with someone else while they were on a break, she breaks up with him. He begs her to take him back and proposes, to which she agrees, much to her family's chagrin.

The relationship is going well... until Belly finds out Jeremiah cheated on her with another girl while the two are at a frat party one night. Heartbroken, she slaps him and spends days in bed crying. To prove his regret, Jeremiah proposes marriage to her.

But after Susannah's death, Conrad's grief created distance between him and Belly leading to their breakup at prom. This summer, Belly and Conrad seek closure for their failed relationship, while she and Jeremiah resume their friendship, after she picked Conrad over him.

At Susannah's funeral, Belly catches Conrad in his room with another girl, and they have a fight in which Belly tells Conrad to go to hell, and that she hates him. Conrad bites back by telling Belly he should have never started a romance with her, as she is just a kid.

Conrad's flaw is he doesn't know how to communicate. At times, he can push Belly away, making the words he says to her hurtful and insulting. If you take away the fact that Belly has been in love with Conrad for years, Jeremiah is the right choice in every situation because of how good of a guy he is.

The book then flashes forward a few years later as Belly is now 24 years old. She reveals that she a year abroad in Spain after breaking up with Jeremiah, where Conrad wrote her letters.
