Easy side dishes are my cup of tea.The fewer ingredients involved, the more excited I get. By the time I’ve used enough brainpower to come up with the main entrée, I need a simple side dish. Creamed Cabbage with heavy cream fits these standards while also coming in as a delectablecomfort food.

With only five simple ingredients, you can throw together creamed cabbage in a pinch. Or, jazz it up to your own tastes by adding simple seasonings such as onion powder, garlic powder, or red pepper flakes.

A Creamed Cabbage with Heavy Cream

I love this creamed cabbage recipe. Let me tell you why. First off, it is yummy in my tummy – I can eat it all by itself (as my meal), or it also makes the perfect side dish to any piece of meat.

Also, it’s a low carb creamed cabbage, which means it fits as a keto creamed cabbage. Heavy cream is a low carb friendly ingredient making this a great addition to a low carb diet.

Another reason I love it is because it only has 5 ingredients, with salt and pepper being two of the five. And last but certainly not least, it is all made in one skillet in about 15 minutes total cooking time.

Yes, regular cooked cabbage can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months or so; however, creamed cabbage with heavy cream is a different story. The high fat content of the heavy cream does not do well in the freezing process.

No, I do not recommend freezing creamed cabbage. Due to the high fat content of the heavy cream, the fats separate during freezing resulting in undesirable taste and texture.

Old Fashioned Cabbage Recipes

Mom got me a new cookbook a couple months back called the Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book, and I found this Tennessee Cabbage recipe in it.

Cabbage is one of those vegetables that I love but don’t tend to give enough love to. Yet, during the summer, I always find myself with one or two heads of cabbage from the garden hanging out in the fridge ready to be used up.

Some of my favorite ways to prepare it are Simple Coleslaw, German-Style Red Cabbage, Smoked Sausage and Cabbage Skillet, Cheesy Cabbage Casserole and Sweet and Sour Cabbage.
