Suits has been having a streaming renaissance, with more and more people tuning in for the legal drama – despite it first premiering 10 years ago, and ending with a shorter episode run with season nine back in 2019.
With the sudden build and a new wave of popularity, the ongoing reboot conversation has once again surfaced, and many fans are wondering if Suits season 10 – or a spin-off – might finally be on the cards.
Will Suits get a season 10 as part of a reboot?
"Let me say right off that there is no #Suits reboot or anything in the works," Aaron Korsh wrote on social media back in August 2023 during a Q&A with fans of the show.
What's more, Korsh cited the strikes as being one of the reasons why conversations weren't happening, while also noting that a network or streamer would have to reach out in order to get the ball rolling.
"And then we would have to collectively want to," he added. "Which is no small thing..."
When someone replied by saying that Suits wrapped up "beautifully" and that very few reboots ever work, Korsh replied: "I don't really disagree."
The show, whose cast boasted Gabriel Macht, Patrick J Adams, Meghan Markle, Gina Torres, Rick Hoffman and Sarah Rafferty, has made its way onto streaming platforms Netflix and Peaco*ck, making it available both to new swathes of viewers, as well as classic viewers that want to settle in for a re-watch.
Suits is also now available through the BBC for the very first time, so it may be about to find a whole new audience all over again.
Why was Suits cancelled?
It was announced in 2019 that the USA Network's flagship series would be coming to an end, but not before allowing show creators to wrap up its story in a 10-episode ninth and final season.
Season eight of Suits became something of a reboot, following the departures of three of the show's core cast members – including Gina Torres, Patrick J Adams and, of course, Meghan Markle.
Three new cast announcements were made (enter Dulé Hill, Amanda Schull and Katherine Heigl) in order to join the remaining original stars Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty and Rick Hoffman.
According to Deadline, Suits' final season, and therefore the end of the show, would coincide with the expiry of the remaining series regulars' contracts.
Korsh told the publication that the decision to end the show was made "right after we finished shooting season 6" and that the original plan had always been "a 16-episode season 8 and a 10-episode season 9".
Will there be any Suits spinoffs?
Yes! Suits spinoff show Suits: LA is officially moving forward with a pilot order at NBC, with Korsh returning to write the episode, alongside original producers Doug Liman, Dave Bartis, Gene Klein and Victoria Mahoney.
It will follow new character Ted Black (played by Stephen Amell), a former federal prosecutor who moves his high-powered practice from New York to Los Angeles.
The official synopsis reads: "His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.
"Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can't help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved."
Victoria Justice has also been cast in the LA spinoff, along with John Amos and Kevin Weisman.
There had previously been rumours of various Suits character spinoffs, most notably with Rick Hoffman's Louis Litt at the centre.
"There were numerous ideas for spinoffs that we mostly just sort of fantasized about," executive producer Gene Klein confirmed to TVLine in August 2023. "Like, Aaron and I would sit around and go, 'What about this? What about that?'"
Klein went on to say that these scenarios involved "taking one or two of the characters and doing their own thing with them, but they just never went anywhere."
Addressing a specific fan question about Rick Hoffman, Korsh recently added (via Twitter): "It was just an idea pitched once," before adding a reason as to why it never went any further: "I didn't want Louis to leave #Suits..."
Will there be a Suits spinoff with Mike and Harvey?
Another question fans have often wondered is whether fan favourites Mike and Harvey might come back for a new offshoot of Suits.
Gene Klein has referenced discussions around other possible character explorations, but has not named anyone specifically besides Louis Litt.
"There were lesser characters who [Aaron] had spinoff ideas for, ideas that would be prequels where it'd be a younger version of, like, an ancillary character," he also told TVLine in the aforementioned interview. "Really interesting, fun ideas that we never took anywhere."
Of course, Suits did have something of a spin-off. Pearson (a standalone series that was set in the same world and timeline as Suits) followed Jessica Pearson (played by Gina Torres in both this and the main show) as she put the New York City law firm behind her in order to become the right-hand person for Chicago's mayor.
This show launched in 2019, the same year that Suits was set to come to an end, with Suits' season seven finale acting as something of a pilot. In addition to its leading lady, many of Suits' bosses, including creator Aaron Korsh, EP Daniel Arkin and executive producers Doug Liman, Dave Bartis and Gene Klein were all involved in Pearson.
Korsh recently admitted that he hadn't wanted Torres to leave Suits either, saying it was "for her life" and not specifically in order to have a spin-off.
Sadly Pearson was cancelled after just one season, with Deadline reporting that the news didn't come as much of a surprise when you took into account its ratings. According to the publication, Pearson struggled to find a wide audience, perhaps because of its grittier feel, and it ranked as the USA Network's lowest-rated original scripted series.
While the final episode was a happy ending for the most part, there was just enough unresolved emotion between Louis and Harvey to leave the office door open ajar for more.
"There's some bittersweetness," Korsh told TV Guide at the time. "When Louis finds out that Harvey and Donna are leaving, he's not happy about that. There's some sadness there. Obviously, I also think [leaving] is hard for Harvey and Donna, even though it's what they're choosing to do and they want to do it."
"There's some sadness. I guess in the big picture it is all a happy ending, but I wanted there to be some feeling of sadness in terms of Harvey leaving and there is still some sense of loss. But yeah, no, I didn't want to have any kind of death or that kind of an end."
Is the Pearson spinoff of Suits on Netflix?
Despite Suits' recent success on Netflix, its sister show is not available to watch on the streaming platform.
Pearson follows Gina Torres' character Jessica Pearson as she leaves behind the New York City law firm and heads into the world of Chicago politics.
Homeland's Morgan Spector also reprised his role as Chicago city mayor Bobby Novak, with Jessica working as a "fixer" for the character.
The series also starred Bethany Joy Lenz, Chantel Riley, Simon Kassianides, Eli Goree and Isabel Arraiza.
Premiering in July 2019, the series ran for 10 episodes before being cancelled due to low ratings a month after the season finale.
You can purchase episodes of Pearson on Prime Video, but only in the US.
Suits is available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
