Prime Video's coming-of-age romantic drama The Summer I Turned Pretty is set in the idyllic beachside town of Cousins Beach, and a few filming locations were used to bring the setting to life. Based on the young adult book series by Jenny Han, The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Isabel "Belly" Conklin (Lola Tung), as she and her family spend summer at Cousins Beach with the Fisher family. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 chronicles the summer when Belly turns 16 and gets involved in a love triangle with the Fisher brothers: her long-time crush, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and his younger brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
Belly's mother Laurel (Jackie Chung) has been bringing her to visit Cousins Beach since she was a baby, so the town has a special place in Belly's heart. Belly counts down the days all year until the Conklins return to Susannah Fisher's (Rachel Blanchard) beach house. The beach house is very important to Belly, and Cousins Beach itself has been the source of many fond memories. Though her 16th summer has its romantic twists and turns, Belly says in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 ending that she'll "always come back to this place and these people." Cousins Beach is a gorgeous location and a perfect setting for Belly's coming-of-age journey.
The Fictional Cousins Beach Is Located In Massachusetts In The Summer I Turned Pretty

Though the location of Cousins Beach isn't explicitly stated, it's believed to be in the state of Massachusetts, possibly on the peninsula of Cape Cod. The Summer I Turned Pretty television show provides some evidence for this; author Cleveland Castillo (Alfredo Narciso) is interviewed on a local show called Good Morning Massachusetts, and the series shows some Cape Cod-style homes. The TV series also implies that Belly and her family live in Pennsylvania when it isn't summer, due to Laurel's car's license plates, so it would make sense if Cousins Beach is only a few hours' drive from their home.

A People Magazine article goes into even more detail on the real-life locations from the Prime Video series. The Porters Neck Plantation, a private gated golf course community, was used as the location for the Fisher family's beautiful beach house. The neighborhood was used for many exterior shots, such as the 4th of July barbecue held by the Fishers and Conklins. However, the beach house interiors were filmed on soundstages in Wilmington. Exterior shots for the Cousins Beach Country Club were filmed at Wilmington's Cape Fear Country Club. Many of the night beach scenes were filmed at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, a state park on Kure Beach.

In an interview with Prime Video (via YouTube), Jenny Han revealed what places inspired her when creating Cousins Beach. Han mentions Virginia Beach and Nags Head (which is located on North Carolina's Outer Banks), beaches she grew up going to. However, she was also influenced by other East Coast beaches. Han lived in New York City while writing The Summer I Turned Pretty and went to the Hamptons often. She worked as a nanny during grad school and would visit Cape Cod with them, an experience that served as a big inspiration for the series.

Jenny Han says in the interview that all the beaches she had in her head while writing The Summer I Turned Pretty are the reason why readers, no matter where they live, can feel like Cousins Beach is their beach and can put themselves in Belly's shoes. Cousins Beach may be located in Massachusetts, but even people who haven't been there or to any of the state's beaches can find something relatable in this summer story. Han did a great job combining different beaches to create a place that feels so real to readers and vibrantly comes to life on television in The Summer I Turned Pretty.
