Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent is a legal thriller created by acclaimed TV writer-producer David E. Kelley, famed for delivering outstanding legal dramas like Boston Legal, Goliath, and The Lincoln Lawyer. The series is based on Scott Turow’s eponymous 1987 novel and marks the second screen adaptation after Alan J. Pakula’s 1990 film starring Harrison Ford. The show follows the story of Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who becomes the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus and fights to save his family, marriage, and reputation while trying to prove himself innocent. When X-Men: The Animated Series ended in 1997, it was arguably at the peak of its powers. The Resident is a Fox medical drama series that follows the lives of staff members at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, the series stars Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Bruce Greenwood, among others. Though largely panned by critics, The Resident proved to be quite popular with audiences during its six-season run on Fox. It’s very much a series for fans of TV medical dramas, though it does attempt to break out of the mold by focusing on the bureaucracy and greed of people in the medical world. While not 100% accurate to real life, the series shines a light on the darker side of the medical business, with doctors and patients who often fall below the ideals projected by other medical drama shows. The quality does dip towards the end, but for the most part, The Resident is an enjoyable series with great actors that explores some interesting aspects of the health industry in a way that most medical dramas don’t.

The narrative can be quite painful and messy at times, but it's all underscored by a dark and twisted sense of humor. One of the most highly anticipated video game adaptations in recent times, Fallout premiered on Prime Video on April 10, 2024, to critical acclaim. The show is chock-full of brilliant performances, especially from Ella Purnell in the lead role. It’s also well-written, balancing faithfulness to the source material with a narrative that’s accessible to those who are new to the franchise. Add to that some epic visual effects and production design, and you get a show that further proves that the series form is the best way to adapt a video game franchise.

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is a spinoff series inspired by his 2019 film of the same name. The show’s eight-episode first season dropped on Netflix on March 7, garnering generally favorable reviews from critics and an overwhelmingly positive reception from viewers. Theo James and Kaya Scodelario deliver perfectly crafted performances that elevate a slick series full of zany, thrilling Guy Ritchie-ness. Despite sharing its name and some elements of the plot with the 2019 film, The Gentlemen series is its own beast and is perhaps best enjoyed if taken as a separate story altogether. It’s a mad-cap collection of deadly, absurd adventures with a sense of humor and style that makes its roughly eight-hour runtime breeze by as you become more and more invested in this world and its characters.

Steven Zaillian’s Ripley is a black-and-white period noir thriller that stars Andrew Scott as the titular grifter. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels, the eight-episode miniseries also stars Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, and more. A Manhattan industrialist hires New York conman Tom Ripley (Scott) to go to Italy and convince his son (Flynn) to come home, but once there, Tom begins a journey of deceit, fraud, and violence as he tries to claw his way to wealth and comfort. While the source material has previously been adapted, Zaillian’s Ripley is unlike anything that’s come before. That’s largely thanks to the performances of the lead cast, who present complex, grounded characters who are neither fully good nor bad. The biggest draw of the series, however, is its mindblowing cinematography, which shows a masterful command of light and shadow that elevates the show from a thriller series to high art.

The show was ordered by the streamer in 2021 and tells the story of Emma and Dexter, who meet on the night of their graduation from university. The year is 1988, but we get to watch Emma and Dexter over the next 20 years on the same day of every year: July 15.

The show stars Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) as Dexter and Ambika Mod as Emma.
