The University Health Service (UHS) provides a full range of confidential, high quality primary health care, mental health, and health promotion services for full-time University of Rochester students. The Student Health Program covers visits to the University Health Service physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses and the University Counseling Center therapiststhrough the mandatory health fee that all full-time students pay.
The UHS clinical staff includes physicians, advance practice providers, and registered nurses. To provide students with a more personal and effective interaction, all students are assigned a primary care provider (PCP) at UHS when they begin studies at the University of Rochester. You are encouraged to schedule appointments with your PCP. Visits are scheduled by calling (585) 275-2662.
Health CareServices for Students
UHS provides a full range of primary health care services, including the treatment of illnesses and injuries, GYN care, management of ongoing medical problems, and advice and treatment for any health concern. Prevention of illness is a major focus of the care provided at UHS. During your visit to UHS, your primary care provider will help you learn to manage your health care needs.
The Student Health Program, which includes the mandatory health fee and the UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna), covers many of the services listed below. If you are covered under your own insurance plan, it is a good idea to verify your coverage with your insurance company before receiving services that are not covered by the mandatory health fee.
Allergy Injections
Students can arrange to receive their allergy injections at any UHS office. There is no charge for the administration of the allergy injection; however, there is a charge for the serum. If your health insurance does not cover the cost of the serum, you will be financially responsible for these charges.
Counseling at the University Counseling Center
The University Counseling Center(UCC) provides comprehensive initial assessments, individualized treatment plans and support to put such a plan into action to all University of Rochester full-time students who pay the mandatory health fee. The individualized treatment plan may include referral to group therapy, workshops, assisted on-line therapy, or brief individual therapy. UCC therapists are licensed professionals and professionals-in-training from a variety of mental health disciplines.
Health Education and Health Promotion
The UHS Health Promotion Office inspires students to LIVE, GROW, THRIVE! Our team provides a variety of health education and wellness programs, with a focus on the topics most meaningful to students: health equity, mental well-being, mindful university project, nourishment and body image, sexual health, and sleep. Immunizations/Vaccinations
Immunizations for travel and other vaccines, such as influenza (flu) vaccine, HPV vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccine, MMR, Tdap, and polio are given at UHS. There is no charge for the administration of the vaccine; however, there is a charge for the vaccine. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) covers the cost of vaccines. Before receiving vaccines at UHS, we recommend you check with your insurance company to verify that your plan covers the cost of the vaccine when given by UHS. UHS holds flu vaccine clinics and HPV vaccine clinics during the academic year. See Travel Care & Immunizations below for information about travel immunizations.
Laboratory Tests and X-Rays
Most laboratory testsare completed during a visit to UHS. UHS can provide PPD skin tests to patients. Patients needing X-rays are referred to the Department of Radiology at Strong Memorial Hospital. These services are not covered by the mandatory health fee. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) provides coverage for diagnostic laboratory tests and x-rays. If your health insurance does not cover these charges, you will be financially responsible.
Medical Procedures (i.e. EKG, Wart Removal, Ear/Pulse Oximetry, IUD placement)
Most medical procedures completed during a visit to UHS will be billed to insurance.The office visit for the procedure iscovered by the mandatory health fee. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) provides coverage formedical procedures. Ifyour health insurance does not cover the charge for the medical procedure, you will befinancially responsible.
Medications
Several non-prescription and prescription medications prescribed by UHS providers are available for purchase through the dispensaries at UHS offices, often at a lower cost than at a local pharmacy. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) includes coverage for prescription medications. If your health insurance does not cover these charges, you will be financially responsible. You may be interested in the prescription drug discount card plan offered by Monroe County, however the discount card cannot be used for purchasing medications at UHS.
If the medication you need is not available for pick-up at UHS, you may choose to utilize a local pharmacy or have your family ship your medication from home to your CMC box. Students typically choose to pick up prescriptions at the CVS Pharmacy in College Town. The Blue Line and College Town Express shuttles both can bring students from River Campus to College Town. In rare circ*mstances, some students may need injectable medications, medications that need refrigeration, or medication that needs to be ordered through a mail order pharmacy that will not deliver to your CMC box. Please contact UHS if you need medication that falls into one of these categories.
Nutrition Services
UHS offers nutrition services with a registered dietitian at the UHS office on the River Campus. These services are covered by the mandatory health fee. A referral from your primary care provider at University Health Service or a therapist at University Counseling Center is required before an appointment is scheduled with the dietician. Physical Therapy
UHS offers physical therapy services at the UHS offices at the Eastman School of Music and on the River Campus. These services are not covered by the mandatory health fee. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) provides coverage for physical therapy with a $10 co-payment at the time of visit. If your health insurance does not cover these charges, you will be financially responsible.
Primary Care Services
Primary care services include treatment for illnesses and injuries, management of ongoing medical problems, preventive health care and health education, gynecological care, and advice for health care concerns. The UHS clinical staff includes physicians, advance practice providers and registered nurses. Visits to UHS are confidential. All full-time students are assigned a primary care provider (PCP) at UHS. You are encouraged to schedule appointments with your PCP whenever possible. Please call (585) 275-2662 to schedule an appointment.
Psychiatry Care
Visits with UHS psychiatrists for medication management are covered by the mandatory health fee. A referral from your primary care provider at the University Health Service or a therapist at the University Counseling Center is required before an appointment is scheduled with the psychiatrist. Referrals to Specialists
Students needinga referral to aspecialist for a consultation will be referred to a specialist in the area by their UHS primary care provider. Visits to specialist are not covered by the mandatory health fee. Students enrolled on the UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) are required to have a referral from a UHS or UCC provider in advance of the specialist visit to assure coverage. Co-payments will apply. If your health insurance does not cover these charges, you will be financially responsible.
Sexual and gender health services
University Health Service offers primary care services for people of all gender, identities, and sexual orientations. Inclusive and comprehensive support is also provided for students’ pelvic health and contraceptive needs. A confidential appointment can be scheduled with one of our primary care medical providers for contraception support, testing for sexually transmitted infections and HIV, pelvic or prostate exams, Pap tests, and more. Travel Care & Immunizations
Students planning to travel outside the United States can see their UHS primary care physician or advance practice professional to review health risks, update immunizations, and plan for health care while abroad. An office visit should be scheduled at least 30 days in advance of travel to assure vaccine effectiveness and time to purchase any necessary supplies.
This office visit is covered by the mandatory health fee. The UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) provides coverage for immunizations. If your health insurance does not cover immunizations, you will be financially responsible.

Treatment for Blood/Body FluidExposures
