SOUND
Pleonastic sound is used in the sequence of Run lola run, an example of this is when the sound of the clock ticking gets louder. This is effective as it heightens the noise in the shot causing the sense of the character running out of time as the noise gets louder and louder. Although, this is a compelling sound device to use in thriller’s we decided against it for Radio-Waves as we wanted the piece to connote very still and aerie calm sound. Another sound device used in Run Lola Run is ambient sound this is shown in the film through muffled sound of whispers. Whispers adds to the haunted feel of the thriller as it has elements of horror as it can give the feeling that you are surrounded or being followed. Also the sound of breaking glass, a form of is diagetic sound portray’s to the chaos in the scene building onto the range of other sound devices. The overall score of the film is at a contest fast pace as even the non-diabetic background music is speed up to imitate the crucial running out of time. We decided against these devices for sound in Radio-Waves as we did not have the same theme of a quick paced plot. Although, there was the sound device of a voice over which we felt worked really well in Thriller films to add to the plot of the film, therefore, we felt it was essential to be incorporated into our film Radio-Wave.
EDITING
The editing in the film Run lola Run uses non linear parallel editing. An example of parallel editing is when the film shows the boyfriend’s story Manny and the girlfriends story lola side by side. Also edited in black and white shown in flashbacks. Other editing techniques included jump cuts showing a montage of possible ideas of what could happen if someone got the money. This was to expose the potential outcomes for Lola if she did not find the money in time. Building onto the suspense of what outcome will occur. The film Run Lola Run goes against the typical Hollywood style of continuity editing. This was a refreshing change as the non linear editing was creative and very intriguing classifying the film as having elements of art house. Editing devices such as fast forwarding, colour manipulation, flash transformations with photographs and animation. Fast forwarding is present throughout the film as it directly shows the extreme speed. Also colour manipulation is shown in Lola’s hair as it is shown as a vibrant red contrasting to the normal dull colours of the domestic scenery. The colour red is fitting with thriller codes and conventions as it evokes the mood of violence and aggression that either displays in the character or in the outcome of the character.
It signifies the character as standing out and making a statement usually portray’s characters who have a wild personality. The flash transformations shown after each photograph displays the strangers life and background is very effective in capturing the audience’s eye. It makes the viewers think what the story of Lola will be. Finally the animation of Lola as a cartoon shows the cross in fiction and reality. The low angle/overhead shots of the cartoon running down the never ending stairs symbolises the turmoil that she is facing, in her fictional world a physical spiralling staircase, but in the real world a metaphorical spiralling staircase as she has to collect money before manny has to commit a crime or get killed by a certain time.
Run Lola Run also differentiates the camera quality in certain scenes. When filming Lola’s fathers relationship with a women the camera quality is is VHS tape grainy. However, this juxtaposes to when the camera is filming Lola’s life is sharp and clear. We assessed this technique which can he highly visually effective in a Thriller to show the differing moods in each setting although, we felt that Radio-Waves does not need this technique as it would just take away from the desolate scenery in the film.
