Trivia.
1) Filmed simultaneously with Missing in Action (1984), in June of 1985, this film was supposed to be released first. However when the producers realized the second film was the better of the two, they released it first & named this film a prequel.
2) The film takes place in 1972 - 1982 which timeline contradicts the events of Braddock: Missing In Action 3.
3) Features some of the same music cues as Mad Max 2. Both films were scored by Brian May.
4) Professor Toru Tanaka also features in another Chuck Norris film - An Eye For An Eye.

Review by Andy Summers 🤠 ★★½ 9
Whenever I think about Chuck Norris I can't help but remember Bruce Lee pulling his chest hair out in The Way of the Dragon, then blowing it away nonchalantly while Chuck tries to stifle his tears. I've seen 10 Norris films, well 9 really, in fact 8 if you don't count his cameo in Dodgeball, and besides Lone Wolf McQuade, they've all been shite. I know Chuck had his limitations as an actor, as well as reaching things from the top shelf, but he certainly made a name for himself as a martial artist in the 1970's and 80's. In fact Norris was one of Bruce Lee's buddies, although when Cliff Booth killed Lee back in 1973, it opened the…

"I'll get you for this" - Braddock,
I miss fun Chuck Norris.
In MIA 2: The Beginning, we get a prequel to a movie that I didn't even like that much. We find out that Braddock was locked in a Vietnamese prison camp for years and we see what that was like. It's straight masculinity porn for people that are scared of people that look different than them. It's a depressing slog where you just watch torture scene after torture scene and conclude with an unsatisfying revenge plot. It's depressing and uninteresting. Not a recommend.

1972 Vietnamkrieg

Anyone expecting a nuanced, culturally sensitive and emotionally insightful account of Colonel Braddock’s time in a Vietnamese POW camp should probably have their head examined, but Chuck Norris’s rugged stoicism works well as a prisoner biding his time while he plans his escape. The absence of M. Emmet Walsh’s easy charisma is keenly felt, but I did enjoy Soon-tek Oh’s scenery-chewing performance as the monstrous camp commandant, and Braddock’s fellow prisoners have much more personality than might be expected too.
Missing in Action 2: The Beginning is an escape movie, so the action is inevitably pretty backloaded, although the final fight between Norris and Oh is worth the wait. What comes before is a pretty dour compilation of torture, threats…

This is less bombastic than the first movie, but among other things it gets a much better performance out of Chuck Norris. Instead of the steely, affectless man of action he so often plays, this nicely develops his camaraderie with the other prisoners, and lets him be vulnerable in ways his most notable movies don’t often do. He’s the most stoic, most capable of the heroes, but he’s still human.
This doesn’t really turn into a Rambo clone until the last third, but even then, the action, while still tasty, is scrappier and tenser. Norris’ triumph is less certain, his command of the jungle environment less sure. And while this isn’t free of the issues plaguing depictions of Asian characters in such movies, it has a pretty good villain in Soon-Tek Oh, who gets a pretty satisfying climactic fight scene with Norris.

Three years have passed since I watched the first Missing in Action and now I'm finally getting to the rest of the series with Missing in Action 2: The Beginning. Honestly, the only thing interesting about this film is that it was supposed to be the first movie until Cannon decided the intended sequel was better and then switched the releases to make this a prequel. Otherwise, this is a very typical Cannon effort which lays the American jingoism on real thick with a very repetitive and stupid story that isn't really enough to sustain even a 95-minute movie. There just isn't anything in Missing in Action 2 that you wouldn't find in better action movies and it's pretty forgettable Reagan-era propaganda even going by the low bar set for Chuck Norris films.
Review by Louis ★½
A downgrade when compared to its predecessor, Missing in Action 2: The Beginning is a surprisingly boring action flick that didn't really have much going for it.
At least Chuck Norris didn't sexually assault anyone in this one.

“This is for me.”
Soon-Tek Oh was a great villain, and that rat scene was something else.
Appreciated the amount of grenades in this one but once again we come up shy in the bazooka department. At least they made up for it with some sweet flamethrower action.
Review by Keith G ★★
Is this better than the original? No not really. It's certainly leaning big into exploitation cinema. What I don't understand is how Chuck stayed in such great shape on his rations of rice for all those years? Must be all those rats he was chowing down on.

This second installment in the series, which was supposed to be the first, but was turned into a prequel after it was realized that the planned sequel was the better film (they were shot back-to-back and both were completed before either was released), has all the same problems as the first one, and none of its virtues. In addition to being stupid and racist, it’s also boring and incompetent.
Director Lance Hool doesn’t display much understanding of how to pace an action movie. When the action does finally come he can’t seem to handle simple concepts like spatial relations, or even basic continuity at times. Before that point he’s wasted far too much time on repetitive torture scenes.
It’s a…
