Michael Mosley says an apple a day can reduce diabetes risk and aid weight loss (2024)

Dr Michael Mosley has detailed how there is some truth to the saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' explaining how the popular fruit can reduce your risk of developing diabetes, regulate blood pressure and promote blood vessel health.

Writing in his book 'Just One Thing: How Simple Changes Can Transform Your Life' the renowned TV doctor also explains that he tries to finish his lunch with an apple each day.

That's because according to the Fast 800 diet creator, there are an abundance of health benefits that come with eating the snack, whether it be a Granny Smith or a Pink Lady. And Dr Michael says that you should be aiming to eat one unpeeled apple every day.

Writing in his book, he explains: "When I have lunch, whether it is some oily fish or a sandwich on the go, I like to finish with an apple. I love the flavour and I find that it clears the palate. Apples are also my go-to dessert, whether as apple crumble, baked apple or apple cake.

"So I'm delighted to be able to tell you that there really is a lot of truth in the old saying that 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away.'"

Dr Michael then goes on to detail how Dr Catherine Bonodonno - a nutritionist at the Institute for Nutrition Research at Edith Cowan University, Australia - told him how apples contain beneficial compounds known as flavonoids. These are produced by plants to protect them from sunlight and disease - and it is thought that they have a similar effect in humans when consumed.

They help produce nitric oxide in the body which regulates blood pressure and maintains blood vessel health. Nitric oxide can also reduce inflammation, improve blood pressure and increase the quantity of healthy bacteria while killing off harmful bacteria in the gut.

Dr Mosley also details how apples have been proven to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of diabetes and boost a number of vitamins and minerals. The Fast 800 creator also says that you can help maintain your weight with apples.

In his book, he adds: "One US study found that middle-aged women asked to eat 75g of dried apple a day not only reduced their LDL (bad cholesterol) levels by 23 per cent, but despite the extra calories, they actually lost 1.5kg - just over 3lb - in weight too."

Dr Mosley also said that Pink Ladies have the highest concentration of flavonoids, so if you're looking to maximise the effects, skimp on the Galas and Honeycrisps.
