Man United-supporting kid endures rollercoaster of emotions (2025)

Footage perfectly captured a young Manchester United supporter as his despair turned to joy within a matter of minutes on an extraordinary night at Old Trafford.

The youngster was near inconsolable as the Red Devils trailed Lyon with time running out in extra time of their Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon.

Bruno Fernandes had given the Premier League outfit a glimmer of hope after two goals in the additional period from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette looked to have sent the Red Devils crashing out of Europe.

TNT Sports cameras caught the young United supporter in the stands holding back tears, with the scoreline 3-4 in favour of the French side.

But his anguish - and that of the thousands packed into Old Trafford - turned into jubilation after a frankly mad 60 seconds that saw both Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire find the net to send United into the last four.

The broadcaster's canny camera operator quickly returned to find the young boy, whose expressions represented an entire fanbase.

Following Maguire's pinpoint header, he proudly thumped his fist as Old Trafford bounced around him with an expression that suggested he was still disbelieving of the events he had witnessed.

Red Devils supporters were quick to comment on the youngster on social media, with one saying in X: 'He'll remember this for life.'

'The beauty of the game,' said another, while a third joked: 'Poor b******d is gonna be hooked on United for life now.'

United boss Ruben Amorim said post match: '4-2 with one more player and you think it's over.But here, it's never over. I was watching again the ‘99 documentary for inspiration for these moments, it was a great night.’

‘Even when we it was 3-2 we felt like we’d felt chances to come back into it,’ match winner Maguire said. ‘

As soon as we got the fourth I felt like there’d be another chance and it fell to myself and thankfully I put it in the back of the net and it was an amazing feeling.’

Mainoo added, on the prospect of going all the way and winning this competition now: ‘It was an amazing comeback, we put ourselves in that situation, though.

‘When I came on I was just trying to bring energy and feed off the rest of the players. The performance wasn’t the highest standard but win like that can bring some momentum.‘

United's dramatic win sets up a semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao, whose stadium will stage the final of the competition on May 21.
