Is Tallow Soap Good For Your Skin? | Summer Solace Tallow (2024)

Why is tallow soap suitable for your skin?

Tallow is at the heart of what we do here atSummer Solace. Thoughtallow is finally beginning to experience a much-deserved revival within natural health and sustainability communities, it is still a new and unfamiliar ingredient to many. As tallow plays an integral role in the majority of what we make, our soaps included, we thought we would take the opportunity to share some of the manybenefits of tallow– specifically regenerative tallow – and just why it is so special.

First, a brief overview of what tallow is and what makes the tallow we use atSummer Solaceunique. Tallow is a healthy animal fat made from rendered suet, the fat naturally surrounding the loins and kidneys of cattle. Though typically disposed of nowadays, tallow can be used in myriad culinary and cosmetic applications when diverted from the waste stream. It has been amongst resourceful pastoral peoples for much of human history. At Summer Solace, we make all of our tallow in-house by slow, traditional methods from suet harvested from healthy animals raised for meat who have lived theirlives grazing on local regenerative Northern California pasturelands.

Tallow Soap Has More Nutrients Than Other Soap

Grass-fed tallow is nutrient dense. It contains higher omega-7, omega-9, conjugated linoleic acid, and vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12 than plant-based fats – all these are essential to radiant, healthy skin. Because the fat saturation content of beef tallow is more similar to human fat, the vitamins within it are also more bioavailable and readily absorbed. In addition to its incredible moisturizing properties, tallow's abundant nutrient profile also makes it a natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant, helping to preserve your skin's natural beauty.

Tallow Hydrates Dry Skin

One of the most common issues people have with their soap is that it dries out their skin, often leaving them feeling itchy and uncomfortable.Tallow soapdoes just the opposite. The unique structural properties of grass-fed tallow and its high oleic acid content allow it to balance out dry and oily skin types, clear out clogged pores, and deeply hydrate and restore skin at a cellular level. Tallow assists your body in producing its healthy collagen, a nourishing and vital protein that helps repair and regenerate skin's natural elasticity and slows down the appearance of wrinkles. Regular use of tallow soap and other skincare products like ourbalmsandsalt scrubshelp to build up your skin's sebum content, creating soft and healthy-looking skin.

Grass-fed Tallow is More Sustainable

All tallow arenotcreated equal. As an animal product, fat can be ethically sourced from regeneratively raised, grass-fed cattle that help to draw down carbon from the atmosphere (directly combating climate change), or it can be made from the byproduct of factory-farmed, grain-fed cattle whose poor living conditions are detrimental to the health of the earth.Summer Solacetallow not only comes from responsiblyraised and grazed beef cattle – the ranches are hyper-local, minimizing transportation emissions and dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of the final product. When considering the sustainabilityof your tallow-based body care regimen, the choice is an obvious one.

Also, unsurprisingly, as an added benefit, tallow made from healthy, grass-fed cattle fat is better for your skin. Higher in all the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients we seek to get out of tallow, the naturally more diverse and healthy diets of pasture-raised animals translate to a richer, more nutrient-dense tallow for use in skin care products.
