There is no easy way to achieve a 270 on the Uniform Bar Exam. There is no one size fits all guide on how to achieve a 270. If so there would be a lot less people stressing about the bar exam! However, there are some things you can do to help you achieve a score of 270 on the UBE. Stick to the following tips and tricks and you will be well on your way to scoring that 270.
How To Achieve A 270 On The UBE
1. Make studying for the uniform bar exam your full-time job
Unfortunately, this is not an option for everyone taking the UBE. Some people have no choice but to work part-time or even full-time as they study for the bar exam. But if you are fortunate to have the available time to commit to studying for the bar exam, then you absolutely should.
In order to achieve a 270 on the UBE, studying for the bar exam should be your full-time job and you should treat it as such. Face studying for the bar like you would any other job. You have to wake up and be at work (aka wherever you study) by a certain time. You should also have a lunch break and a set time when your work day ends. Sure, you will definitely have to put in some late nights and extra hours for this job, but, like any other job, you still need to go home (or leave the room) so you can eat dinner and get a full night’s sleep.
Some students who are easily distracted find it helpful to go to the library or somewhere outside of their home to study. Others will study at home but engage in some other routine at the end of the workday (e.g. they will walk around the block, which some find similar to walking home from work).
Set deadlines and due dates for yourself and hold yourself accountable to them. Treat studying for the bar exam like a full-time job and it will help keep you accountable and on track on days you really do not want to study.
2. Break up with procrastinating now.
If you want to get a 270 on the UBE, you have to finally break up with procrastination. This is not law school anymore. You cannot teach yourself everything you need to know a week before the exam. The amount of law you need to learn and master before the bar exam is staggering. You have to be prepared for all sorts of questions. You cannot achieve a 270 on the UBE by saving all your studying for the last minute.
It is hard to end a relationship with procrastinating. Perhaps you have been procrastinating since as far back as high school. But if you want a 270 on the bar exam you have to end the cycle of procrastination. It will be hard. Some days you will feel like you cannot stand another rule of law. Maybe you think you can put it off and just do more work the following day. Before you know it, you are in a cycle of procrastination that could very well turn into a death spiral. You will end up struggling under a pile of backed up assignments and possibly never catch up.
In order to achieve a 270, successful bar takers stick to a schedule. You have to hold yourself accountable to your study schedule. Sometimes it will require forcing yourself to take practice tests or review outlines you do not want to do. You absolutely have to stay on top of your schedule. If you do not like your bar exam study schedule provided by your course, make your own. You will find yourself much better off with a schedule.
3. Always ask yourself what you can do better.
It is important not to drown yourself in self-doubt while studying for the bar. You should feel confident in your abilities to pass the bar and you should celebrate your small successes while you study. Sometimes you may even find yourself feeling extra confident in some areas. This is a great time for you to ask yourself how you can still improve.
While studying for the bar you should always ask yourself what you can do better if you want to get a 270 on the UBE.Evaluate your own performance and note what areas you need to work on. Some areas may need more work than others. But a successful UBE taker knows their weaknesses and works to improve their performance in those areas.
For example, you may discover you are doing really well in Constitutional Law. While you should take pride in it, you should take the opportunity to ask what areas you need to improve. Maybe you are not so great with Real Property questions. Therefore, you will put more work into learning real property. A successful UBE test taker knows where their strengths and weaknesses are so they can adjust their study plan to ensure they are fully prepared.
4. Know when you need a break.
Not only do successful bar exam takers know their own strengths and weaknesses, they also know when to give themselves a break. While there are some bar takers who study sunrise to sunset, not everyone can study nonstop and remain sane. (In fact, most of those who “study” 12 hours a day are actually not engaged in productive study.Qualityof studying is just as important, if not more important, than quantity.) If you know you need to take breaks to do well, then take breaks! Just remember to go back to work after your break.
Not studying may not feel like it will put you on the path to achieving a 270 on the UBE. But your brain needs rest. You are learning hundreds of rules of law. Your brain needs breaks to process all the information you are cramming into it. Studying for the bar is like swimming underwater.and your breaks are like coming up for air. If you don’t take them, you will drown. Give your brain a chance to reset every now and then. Use a break as a reward for hard work. It will help you retain more information in the long run.
You can even take a whole day off if you need it. Just adjust your study schedule accordingly. Sometimes, knowing you are going to take a day off will help you do more work the day before and plan to do more work the following day to catch up. Mental health days are a great way to reset your brain and remind you that there is a life waiting for you after you take the UBE!
