You can take the bar exam five times in Texas. Note that according to Texas's Board of Law Examiners, if you sit for any part of the exam, it counts as one of your attempts.
The UBE is difficult and is unlike any other exam you have taken. But thousands of examinees pass the UBE every year. If you've been successful enough to graduate from law school, you certainly have the ability to pass the UBE. If you put in the time.
It happens to thousands of students every single administration. And the good news is, you can retake the exam. The vast majority of Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions allow you to take the Uniform Bar Exam an unlimited amount of times (see this post if you are curious about the approach your jurisdiction takes).
The lowest possible passing score of 266 will suffice in states like South Carolina, Montana, and some others. Depending on how many people have taken the UBE, a score of 280 is approximately the 73rd percentile. A 300 is in about the 90th percentile, and 330 is in the top 1% of all scores.
Kardashian has been open about her struggles with the baby bar test. She failed the exam three times before passing on her fourth attempt. She has said that she was motivated to keep studying by her desire to help people and by her father Robert Kardashian, who was a lawyer.
In California, there is no strict limit to the number of times a candidate can take the bar exam. In other words, if you don't succeed on your first try, you can retake the exam in the subsequent session, and so on.
Overall, Utah is the easiest bar exam to pass. This is true whether you are a first-time taker or repeat taker! In July 2023, Utah had a 94% pass rate for first time takers and a 73% pass rate for repeat takers. It also has the lowest UBE cut score of 260.
A 300 is approximately the 90th percentile. A 280 is approximately the 73rd percentile. A 270 is approximately the 58th percentile. A 260 is approximately the 44th percentile.
The first big decision you need to make is how much time you should devote to UBE prep. Most people study 35-40 hours per week for 9-10 weeks—a total of about 300-400 hours. That's a rough estimate of the average, not necessarily a goal to shoot for.
(Note: percentiles change from administration to administration, but this is a decent guide as to where you stand.) The MBE is curved, so just because you scored “close” to passing doesn't mean you are as close as you think. For example, a 125 is the 32nd percentile, and a 135 is in the 57th percentile.
In order to achieve a 270, successful bar takers stick to a schedule. You have to hold yourself accountable to your study schedule. Sometimes it will require forcing yourself to take practice tests or review outlines you do not want to do. You absolutely have to stay on top of your schedule.
The minimum passing score in Texas is 270. UBE transfer applicants must successfully complete the Texas Law Component before they can be licensed in Texas.
While the Florida Bar Examination includes one component of the UBE—Multistate Bar Examination (MBE®)—the remainder of the exam tests both federal and Florida-specific law. As a result, the Florida Bar Exam is considered one of the more difficult bar exams nationwide.
