Honey Molasses Bread Recipe {Bread machine or by hand} (1)

Although it has molasses and honey, this is not a sweet bread like banana or zucchini bread. This honey molasses bread is really similar to the bread served at steakhouses and has more of a mild sweetness. It goes great with a savory soup, stew, or served warm with lots of butter.

Honey Molasses Bread Recipe {Bread machine or by hand} (2)

This honey molasses bread recipe is specifically for your bread machine but if you don’t have one you can still knead the dough by hand, let it rise, and bake it. I’ll include instructions for both methods below.

Honey Molasses Bread Recipe {Bread machine or by hand} (3)

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Molasses: You’ll want to use unsulphured molasses in this recipe.
  • Honey: To give the bread a little sweetness.
  • Water: You’ll need warm water.
  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter, if you only have salted on hand then skip adding any extra salt.
  • Salt: You’ll need just one teaspoon of salt.
  • Oats: I used quick oats.
  • Bread flour: The base of the bread.
  • Yeast: You’ll need one packet of active dry yeast (equivalent to 2 ¼ teaspoons of yeast)

  • To make with your bread machine, spray your bread machine with non-stick spray.

  • Use your bread maker’s 2 pound setting to prepare the bread. You will want to select the white bread setting, if that’s an option on your machine.
  • You can take the paddle out after mixing or carefully remove it with oven mitts once the bread has been baked.

Instructions to make bread by hand

  • If you want to make the bread without a bread machine, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

  • Cover the dough with a dish towel and let it rise for about an hour in a quiet and dark place.
  • Place the dough in a greased loaf pan and bake 350 degrees for about 25 to 30 minutes (until the crust is browned).

📋 What should I serve with this bread?

I love to make it with this Outback copycat Alice Springs chicken recipe. This bread goes well with butter, jam, or is great as a side for a hearty dinner.

💭 Do I have to use a bread machine?

There really is something magical about fresh baked bread. It fills your entire home with a heavenly smell and this is especially true for this honey molasses bread.

This is my absolute favorite recipe to make with my bread maker but don’t fear, if you don’t have a bread maker you can make this bread by hand and let it rise. I’ll include instructions for both ways below.

Hi Jess, I haven’t tried this recipe without bread flour so I can’t make any recommendations. I wish I had more information for you, sorry! I am working on an Amish wheat bread recipe and will hopefully have it posted soon.

    Melted butter?
Settings are white, wheat, sweet, artisan? WE is 4:05 hours… I’m trying that one. White is 3:54 so not much difference. Thanks!

I would recommend 2 loaf, warm water, and the white bread setting.

        Should we melt the butter?

        • Two Pink Peonies

Hi Michelle, I usually just let it soften to room temperature. There’s no need to melt it.

Oh this looks so good! Can we add dried fruit and chocolate chips to it, or will it affect the texture/rise?

    Reply

    • Two Pink Peonies

I’ve never added anything to it, but it’s more of a savory bread than a dessert bread. It is similar to the bread they serve at steak houses.

I really want to make this bread! The key to bread machines are following recipes fairly strictly. However you do not mention the size of the loaf (very important)
        Please advise.
And are we we supposed to use the white bread/basic cycle? Cuz this is not white bread…. thanks!

        • Two Pink Peonies

Hi Mick, if you have a standard setting on your bread machine use that one. If not, use the basic or white bread cycle. This should be made on the medium loaf setting.

What size loaf is this? My machine is a 1 or 1 1/2 lbs loaf machine. “Medium” size is not an option. Would this be a 1 or 1 1/2 or even a 2?

          • Two Pink Peonies

Hi there, medium is equivalent to the 2 setting.

FAQs

Is it better to use bread flour in a bread machine? ›

A flour high in gluten will produce a nicely risen loaf, while a low-gluten flour (such as pastry flour, cake flour or self-rising flour) will not. Most bread machine manuals and cookbooks call for bread flour rather than all-purpose flour.

Why is bread machine bread not fluffy? ›

Old or stale yeast. Expired yeast or moisture contaminated yeast will have trouble growing properly and this can lead to dense bread machine bread. Always relatively new yeast & store it in an airtight container.

Can you just knead bread in a bread machine? ›

You can knead and proof your dough directly in the bread machine, then remove and shape it however you'd like.

Do you need a bread maker to make your own bread? ›

If you own a spoon, a bowl, and an oven (ideally also a pizza stone, but a sheet pan will do in a pinch), you can start making bread with this book that is 10 times better than anything that has ever come out of my bread machine. It is not for everyone, however. Many of the loaves require two days, some require three.

Is it worth it to use a bread machine? ›

If you enjoy making bread at home and want to have more control over the ingredients and customization of your bread, a bread maker can be a good investment. Additionally, it can save you money in the long run compared to buying store-bought bread.

Is it cheaper to buy bread or make it in a bread machine? ›

Making bread from a machine is marginally cheaper than buying it, as long as you eat bread frequently enough to offset the cost of the appliance. Specifically, I see this as an investment that's smart for households that go through bread quickly, like large families or homes with multiple roommates.

How can I make my bread lighter and fluffy? ›

All it takes is a small amount of dough enhancer per loaf to create a much lighter and fluffier result. Using a dough enhancer like Vital Wheat Gluten works to improve the texture and elasticity of the dough and elongate the strands of gluten. Doing so allows more room for the gas in the dough to develop and rise.

How do I make my breadmaker bread less dense? ›

- Use bread flour, not regular all-purpose flour for all bread machine recipes. Bread flour contains a higher percentage of gluten than regular all-purpose flour. Using bread flour will produce taller, less dense loaves.

What ingredient makes bread soft and fluffy? ›

Adding sugar weakens the gluten structure, absorbs water, and eventually makes the bread lighter and softer. As a result, sugar improves the bread's taste, structure and texture. Yeast also eats up sugar to produce carbon dioxide, which raises the dough and makes bread fluffy.

How long to wait before slicing bread machine bread? ›

For breads such as a larger crusty sourdough loaf, or a pan loaf I would typically wait 1-2 hours before slicing. Whole Grain and rye breads should be all the way down to room temperature before slicing. If you plan to freeze the bread, I have always waited until the loaves are completely cool before freezing.

Is it better to knead bread by hand or machine? ›

While some enjoy the rhythmic motion of kneading by hand, there are advantages to using a stand mixer. Using a stand mixer takes less time because you can mix and knead the dough in the same bowl. Machine kneading is also easier on the wrists and hands.

What is one drawback of using a bread machine? ›

One disadvantage of using a bread maker as opposed to your hands is that the paddles are typically fixed, meaning they remain in the dough when baking, often leaving a hole in the middle of the loaf.

Is it cheaper to make own bread? ›

In a nutshell, if you're buying basic, cheap sandwich bread, it's probably cheaper than you can make it at home. But if you compare two loaves similar to what you could make at home — one made with high-quality ingredients as opposed to one made with lesser quality ingredients — home baking becomes much cheaper.

Can regular yeast be used in a bread machine? ›

Bread machine yeast and rapid-rise yeast are specially formulated for the bread machine and become active more quickly than active dry yeast. You can use active dry yeast in your bread machine, but it should be dissolved in water before being used.

What happens if you use regular flour in bread machine? ›

Even if your all-purpose flour doesn't have enough gluten, it's okay to use it in the bread machine. Again, the worst that will happen is that your bread won't rise as much as it would have with bread flour.

Does bread flour work better than all-purpose flour? ›

Bread flour produces baked goods with more structure and chew than all-purpose flour, as all-purpose only has a protein content of 10 to 12 percent, versus the 12 to 14 percent of bread. All-purpose flour produces tender baked goods (as opposed to chewy ones) and is ideal for cakes, muffins, biscuits, piecrust, etc.

What is the best yeast to use in a bread machine? ›

The Very Best: Instant Yeast

The yeast of choice in most restaurant kitchens and commercial bakeries, it's easy and convenient. Ever seen a bread recipe that asks you to mix the yeast with warm liquid and allow it to bubble first before using?

When not to use bread flour? ›

Using bread flour in place of all-purpose flour is tricker. If you're baking high-hydration bread—like a sourdough boule or pan de cristal—which requires a high protein content to develop its gluten network, Shilpa doesn't recommend it. “The resulting loaf will be tight-crumbed and a bit squat,” she says.
